12/20/2023 0 Comments Auditory illusion![]() This allows for the perception of auditory sound sources not only in the front or to the sides, but also behind the observer. For instance, in the Shepard Tone illusion ( Shepard, 1964 Deutsch, 1992), the perceived pitch of a sound paradoxically rises or drops continuously.Ī foremost advantage of audition compared to vision is that it represents a three-dimensional sphere surrounding the listener, rather than being restricted to the frontal hemisphere. While most of these documented illusions are visual, multi-stable auditory illusions exist as well. In particular, bi-stable and multi-stable perceptual illusions (e.g., Rubin Vase, Necker Cube, Ames Window, the Spinning Dancer) have revealed how versatile and flexible human perception can be: when multiple interpretations of an external stimulus are possible, the observer might spontaneously switch between two representations of the same physical stimulus ( Sterzer et al., 2009). Illusions are a delight to our playful minds, and artists, magicians, and scientists have long been searching for ways to create multiple meanings out of a single picture, sound, video or physical object. This multi-stable auditory illusion opens opportunities for studying the perceptual, cognitive, and neural representation of objects in motion, as well as exploring multimodal perceptual awareness. Participants were biased towards perceiving transverse compared to bouncing paths, and they became perceptually locked into alternating between front-to-back and back-to-front percepts, perhaps reflecting how auditory objects commonly move in the real world. In a second experiment, the illusory stimulus was looped continuously in headphones while participants identified its perceived path of motion to test properties of perceptual switching, locking, and biases. These results show that this illusion is effectively quadri-stable. ![]() Participants perceived all four illusory motion percepts, and could not distinguish the illusion from the unambiguous stimuli. When asked to rate their confidence in perceiving each sound’s motion, participants reported equal confidence for the illusory and unambiguous stimuli. Here we demonstrate how human listeners experience this illusory phenomenon by comparing ambiguous and unambiguous stimuli for each of the four possible motion percepts. ![]() The sound can be perceived as traveling transversely from front to back or back to front, or “bouncing” to remain exclusively in front of or behind the observer. Here, we introduce a novel quadri-stable illusion, the Transverse-and-Bounce Auditory Illusion, which combines front-back confusion with changes in volume levels of a nonspatial sound to create ambiguous percepts of an object approaching and withdrawing from the listener. However, the human auditory system has unequally distributed spatial resolution, including difficulty distinguishing sounds in front vs. One way we estimate the motion of an auditory object moving towards or away from us is from changes in volume intensity. In addition to vision, audition plays an important role in sound localization in our world. 2Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA.1Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA.How Music and Speech Unlock Mysteries of the Brain.Constance M. On other occasions it helps listeners understand the structure of the speech: we signal a question by raising the pitch at the end of a sentence. Sometimes this is about portraying emotion if we are relaying bad news, the words will tend to descend in pitch. Speech inherently contains melody: as we talk, our words naturally go up and down in pitch. ![]() You must enable JavaScript to play contentĪfter this, when you hear the sentence again, the woman seems to break into song mid-sentence! 12/20/2023 0 Comments Atrial flutter vs afib![]() ![]() ![]() I guess one other similarity that I think is particularly important is both atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter will increase the risk of stroke and the indications for blood thinners are the same regardless of whether a patient has atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. We’ve spent a lot of time discussing atrial fibrillation these past few weeks-and with good reason. Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia that requires treatment and accounts for numerous visits to cardiologists’ offices and emergency rooms. But the atria can misfire in other ways, too. So in your case I would concentrate on treating atrial fibrillation and not focus on atrial flutter at this point. And in patients who have about equal amount of atrial fibrillation to atrial flutter, those patients are treated as if they only have atrial fibrillation. It sounds like in your case, you have both atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. And if that patient is also susceptible to atrial flutter which can start up atrial flutter which typically will continue for hours to days to weeks until something's done to stop it. So a patient will have a brief burst of atrial fibrillation. And that can be explained by the fact that patients who have atrial flutter also commonly have some amount of atrial fibrillation that triggers the episodes of atrial flutter. And the question is why do you have both atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. So I think atrial fibrillation and flutter, you know they're similar in some respects, they're different in other respects. Catheter ablation is very successful and curative for many patients with atrial flutter, particularly if they have only atrial flutter and almost no or no atrial fibrillation.Ĭonversely catheter ablation, it plays a much smaller role in the treatment of atrial fibrillation the procedure is more difficult it's more risky and it has a lower success rate. Now I think the most important difference between atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation is how they're treated in the role of catheter ablation. So typically atrial fibrillation will cause an irregular heart beat. Now atrial fibrillation is much faster than atrial flutter, and it's also much more chaotic than atrial flutter. But patients who have atrial flutter usually have a very regular heart beat. The lower chamber will always goes at a much lower than that. But there are very important differences between atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter - both in terms of the precise mechanism of the arrhythmia, but also how they're treated.Ītrial flutter is an organized regular rapid upper chamber rhythm that goes in almost all patients at about 300 beats a minute - typically between 250 and 350 beats per minute in the upper chamber of the heart. So in both cases you'll want to think about blood thinners. And they also both can cause symptoms and increase the risk of stroke. What is the difference between these two heart rhythm problems and why do I have both of them?Īnswer :So atrial fibrillation atrial flutter are similar arrhythmia in that they both occur in the upper chamber and both cause the upper chamber to beat very rapidly. — - Question: My doctor told me I sometimes have atrial fibrillation and at other times have atrial flutter. ![]() ![]() You can reopen them all each week to potentially get more Season of the Lost gear rolls, Parallax Trajectory, and Destination Materials. 12/20/2023 0 Comments Regional landscape definition![]() ![]() Lille Declaration, European Greenways Association, 12 September 2000 ![]() These routes should meet satisfactory standards of width, gradient and surface condition to ensure that they are both user-friendly and low-risk for users of all abilities. The European Greenways Association defines it asĬommunication routes reserved exclusively for non-motorized journeys, developed in an integrated manner which enhances both the environment and quality of life of the surrounding area. Greenways resemble linear parks, but the latter are only found in urban and suburban environments. They also tend to have a mostly contiguous pathway. ![]() Some greenways include community gardens as well as typical park-style landscaping of trees and shrubs. The term greenway comes from the green in green belt and the way in parkway, implying a recreational or pedestrian use rather than a typical street corridor, as well as an emphasis on introducing or maintaining vegetation, in a location where such vegetation is otherwise lacking. It is a natural or landscaped course for pedestrian or bicycle passage an open-space connector linking parks, nature reserves, cultural features, or historic sites with each other and with populated areas locally certain strip or linear parks designated as parkway or greenbelt. The American author Charles Little in his 1990 book, Greenways for America, defines a greenway as:Ī linear open space established along either a natural corridor, such as a riverfront, stream valley or ridgeline, or overland along a railroad right-of-way converted to recreational use, a canal, scenic road or other route. The British organisation Sustrans, which is involved in creating cycleways and greenways, states that a traffic-free route "must be designed on the assumption that everyone will use it", and measures taken "to assist visually and mobility impaired users". In urban design, they are a component of planning for bicycle commuting and walkability. They incorporate a footpath and/or bikeway within a linear park. Greenways are vegetated, linear, and multi-purpose. In Southern England, the term also refers to ancient trackways or green lanes, especially those found on chalk downlands, like the Ridgeway. ![]() A characteristic of greenways, as defined by the European Greenways Association, is "ease of passage": that is that they have "either low or zero gradient", so that they can be used by all "types of users, including mobility impaired people". The path's surface may be paved and often serves multiple users: walkers, runners, bicyclists, skaters and hikers. Greenways can also be linear parks, and can serve as wildlife corridors.
